My Story
When I was a little girl, my parents gave me an allowance. They provided me with more than I could ever need - food, clothes, a loving home & fun holidays. If I decided with my sassy self that I wanted anything extra - cute denim shorts when I was 12, or make up when I was older, I had to fund from my allowance.
Thanks to this, saving was second nature for me.
As an adult I realised that my ease with money wasn't common among my peers, as they were not taught about how to manage money while growing up. It was not uncommon for friends to have student loan debt from funding their studies, or credit card debt from holidays.
The first time I sat with someone to strategise how to clear her credit cards and student loan, we talked through how she was spending money every month, after she factored everything in, there was £400 unaccounted for. She was amazed as she had no idea where it went every month, and within a few months had paid off all her credit cards.
As a volunteer debt advicer at a London based charity, I saw how people with both low and high incomes struggle with being in control of their money. We went through some simple but hard exercises to help them identiffy areas for saving and earning extra income.
By implimenting simple changes to your thinking, anyone can take control of their money. I enjoy sharing tips and seeing the transformation this brings to others.
10% of my revenue goes towards Because We Can who support social justice worldwide, and Community Money Advice, a debt advice charity.
